The violence of Explaining Myself - The Binds of Translation
In her contribution on the history of literacy education and its ties to religious conversion in Lesotho, Lineo Segoete analyzes how the ignorance and territorial desires of missionaries in the mid-19th century still impact today's basic Sesotho reading and writing through confusing and burdensome rules. Grappling with the resulting difficulties, the non-profit organization Ba re e ne re(once upon a time) draws inspiration from writers like Thomas Mofolo to find subversive and creative ways of dealing with and undoing Sesotho’s colonial heritage.
