No Thought without Language: Identities in the Plural
Résumé:
In dialog with the secondary school teacher Veronika Rauschenbach, the cultural agent Bettina Eberhard traces how identities are constructed. Together, they devise concrete approaches for conceiving a research project on the subject of identity, to be carried out in Rauschenbach’s class. With a central focus on identity as a unifying social construct, behaviors and attitudes are questioned and processes of identity development examined as a form of positioning in dealing with socially produced otherness. How can artistic engagement initiate a process of sensitization that fosters understanding of the socially constructed nature of categories of difference, such as gender, sexual orientation, disability, class, and race? What sort of (artistic) experience can be promoted by an understanding of critical self-positioning?
